Electro frog polarity issue (I think?)

#1

Post by Carl L »

The image shows an Peco electro frog cross-over I have just wired up to Seep PM1 point motors (not sure I needed to post it). Both points have been modified in the prescribed manner, the bridging wire bonds across the gaps on the frog/point rails have been removed and bonds soldered linking each stock rail and its related point rail (hope that makes sense). Insulated rail joiners have been installed at the end of each points 'V'

The Seep PM1 point motors have been wired as per instructions A and B to the switch, C to the CDU, D and E to the Wire bus and F to the frog wire. The switching of both points works fine.

With both points set to run straight, on the main lines, engines run across the points fine. With the points set to use the cross-over engines short on the right hand point in the frog area (running in both directions). The left hand point is fine.

In a process of elimination, on the right hand point I disconnected the F frog wire to the point motor. With that removed engines run across the cross-over without shorting.

I was under the impression that the F wire changed the polarity of the frog when the point was thrown, so I somewhat baffled as to why with it connected engines short.

I know the answer would be to leave the F wire disconnected but with another three cross-overs to connect I'd like to know what I've done wrong, or is something faulty?

Advice/opinion would be appreciated.

Hi
Initially I think you need to swap the wires on D & E of the point motor that has the wire on F removed, then reconnect the F wire. This should remove the short. That is assuming you have IRJs fitted on both Vee rail ends.
If that doesn't resolve the problem, then double check that this motors D & E contacts are actually changing over correctly to the F contact. It is possible for the point blades to move over but the contact of the Seep switch to remain still in the original connection - result a short circuit!
Also worth checking is that the two tiny closure rail gap links have been correctly removed under the point

Spot on advice as always, swapping D & E, then reconnecting the F wire has removed the short. Many thanks.

Now for more wiring up!
