Yes I found that. Too close and the detail can be lost. It does however seem to give a good base - I then got away with using artists acrylics.

Automotive primer eg from Halfords is pretty good - all my loco repaints started with that.

I notice Halfords sell two white aerosol primer paints.

I have always used the first one described as for ‘bare metal’. The other is for use on plastic bumpers and the like.
