It sounds like when you cut the track you have a burr which needs removing before the fishplate can be fitted correctly.

Well I have looked at the offending track again when laid straight end to end with a piece of setrack it looks OK. I am guessing that I didn't lay it properly and when I bent it into the curve I twisted the rails somehow.

We all make errors laying track no matter how long you have been doing it.

I suppose the moral of the story is make sure you fix the error, don't try and live with it?
