Thanks for all the replies, I’m actually beginning to think this may be doable. A bit of tidying up (space making), the lift out section is coming out and back to woodworking. No playing trains for a bit.

Some rooms and buildings are made for the hobby. When I was a member of the CWWRS many years ago, they hired the upper room of a building which one went in from a door from outside and then up a few stairs to the floor level, and while one went up about 4 or 5 ft, one had actually come up under the layout and there was a large layout of about 40ft x 20ft one came up under which went round half the upper portion of the building.

So while the musings over the lift out section continue, work on the Red Lion and terrace moves on; weathered fitting the steam era I think.

Well with day off work it was time to take the bull by the horns; after much ‘not so gentle’ persuasion the so called lift out section was removed….

…. and a start made on the two hinged sections; the upper level I might just leave as a lift out as it’s only 150mm wide, it’s light, and it seems to sit well. The lower section will hinge on the rhs (thanks Steve). The image gives an indication of the opposing gradients and the issues it creates. But, a productive day nonetheless.

Carl, I see a problem (sorry).
Does the left hand side, lower, clear the supporting batten for the upper section as it swings up?
If you hinge the right hand side where it is now, any scenery or track won't allow it to stand vertically. You might want to consider extending the right hand fixed baseboard by a couple of centimetres and reducing the lower lift out section by the same amount to create an offset that will allow it up to fully rise to the vertical.
The hinges will need to be mounted on small blocks (9mm ply will do) to clear the rails as it lifts.
Brian Lambert's online guide has a very good section on this very subject.
"Not very stable, but incredibly versatile." ;)

I only raised my hinges 3mm. Fine if it doesn’t go past the vertical.

Than you both. WTD - very neat indeed. Steve - well spotted, I’ve cut a recess out so the section will lift past the batten. I’ve had a read of Brian’s online article, it adds further clarity, I have to admit I didn’t know about raising the hinges, but it makes sense now. Hopefully I’ll be back in there tonight.
